Vernon County Dairy Breakfast

Jerod and Stacey Fleming and Family will be hosting the Vernon County Dairy Breakfast on June 13, 2026. They operate a 600 acre organic dairy farm and milk 105 cows. Serving will be from 7AM to 11AM. The preliminary plans include a shuttle bus which will pick up and drop off at the Coon Valley Sales Barn.

I believe this is only the second time this event has been in the Town of Coon. The last time the breakfast was in 1990 hosted by Verlin and Jan Ille. We currently have only four active dairy farms in the Town of Coon.

Community Development Block Grant

After the La Farge dam was canceled quite a few acres of land was returned to the Hochunk Nation. Through that action Vernon County receives about 1.2 million dollars per year. In the past few years the Vernon County Board has put $150,000 into a Community Development Block Grant program. Municipalities can apply for grants up to a $10,000 grant which they must match. This allows for 15 grants throughout the county.

The Town of Coon has successfully used two of these grants to update our town hall and shop. The hall and shop are 40 years old and we continue to identify needed maintenance. This year we have applied for cost sharing to seal coat the entrance roads to the town hall as well as the parking lot. The grant will cover 50% of that cost which is estimated at $10,787.00.

Road Maintenance

The flood loan is now set up on a payment schedule so we can get back to our annual seal coating plan. We have gotten bids from Fahrner and Scott Construction on the following: Neprud Road, Tri-State Road/Oak Lane, Old Line Road, Langarrd Lane, and the town hall parking lot and access roads.

Bridge Replacement

Engineering for the Dodson Hollow Bridge is complete. The engineering is cost shared at 80% federal funding and 10% county and 10% local. The Infrastructure Bill increased the construction portion to 100% federal. Construction is set to begin in June.

Watershed Councils

The Town of Coon has two watershed councils – the Coon Creek Community Watershed Council and the Bad Axe Watershed. Both watershed groups continue to promote conservation here in the Coulee Region. The planned decommissioning of the erosion control dams is delayed due to federal funding. All methods of conservation are even more important. Please check both council websites for meeting sites and dates. There is no cost to attend.

The Coon Creek Community Watershed Council has their annual Conservation Day(Confluence) at the Chaseburg Village Park this year on Saturday May 2 from 11AM to 5PM.

Recently CCCWC along with two other local watershed councils got a grant for $100,000 to help continue their work.

Coon Creek Fire Commission News

Ken Phillips was elected in December as the new Fire Chief. The new Assistant Chief is Jacob Nichols. The big item on the list is replacing the 1990 water tender and the 1991 fire truck. Initial talks have been to buy a water tender/pumper. That one truck will replace the two older trucks.

Like everything else the cost has gone up. The 1991 fire truck cost $117,000 fully equipped. Initial estimates for a tanker/pumper are around $600,000.
