Newsletter Change

For many years we have used mailing a newsletter for our communication to Town of Coon residents. Due to costs and poor mail delivery service the town board has decided it’s time to make some changes.

This will be the last mailing of the newsletter. We will post a paper copy at the town hall and Joe Cade at the collection site will have copies available. The newsletter ill also be on our website. In these economic times we have to look at all costs and ways to save.

Community Development Block Grant

After the La Farge dam was canceled quite a few acres of land was returned to the Hochunk Nation. Through that action Vernon County receives about 1.2 million dollars per year. In the past few years the Vernon County Board has put $150,000 into a Community Development Block Grant program. Municipalities can apply for grants up to a $10,000 grant which they must match. This allows for 15 grants throughout the county.

The Town of Coon has successfully used three of these grants to update our town hall and shop. The hall and shop are 40 years old and we continue to identify needed maintenance.

This year we applied for cost sharing to seal coat the entrance roads to the town hall as well as the parking lot. The grant covered 50% of that cost which is estimated at $10,787.00.

There were still funds available after the first round of grants. With security becoming an issue in this world we got pricing on security cameras for the hall and shop and have applied for a cost-share grant. Grants will soon be announced.

Road Maintenance

We are currently getting pricing for Nerison Road and Gjefle Lane for 2027. Gjefle Lane requires grinding and reshaping. It’s nice to get back into the maintenance after all the flooding issues.

Bridge Replacement

The Dodson Hollow Bridge has been replaced. The protective wall that FEMA approved after the floods in 2007 and 2008 was blended into the west end of the new bridge. That wall provides protection for a couple of downstream residents.

Zoning Amendments

The Town of Coon Zoning Committee recommends two changes to our Zoning Ordinance. First they recommend lowering the animal unit number to 200. They also recommend  raising the acreage for agriculture designation from 2 to 5 acres.

The public Hearing on these two amendment recommendations will be on October 22 at 5:30PM followed by the town board meeting at 6:00PM.

Watershed Councils

The Town of Coon has two watershed councils – the Coon Creek Community Watershed Council and the Bad Axe Watershed. Both watershed groups continue to promote conservation here in the Coulee Region. The planned decommissioning of the erosion control dams is delayed due to federal funding. All methods of conservation are even more important. Please check both council websites for meeting sites and dates. There is no cost to attend.

The Coon Creek Community Watershed Council has their annual Conservation Day (Confluence) at the Stoddard Village Park on the first Saturday of May 2027. In September the CCCWC celebrated the five year anniversary. The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) camp was active for only four years from 1933 to 1937 in Coon Valley.

Growing up and looking back in history the CCC was the ultimate in conservation group. In ninety to one hundred years will there be Watershed Councils in the history books?

Coon Creek Fire Commission News

The Coon Creek Fire Commission Tanker Committee is currently accepting proposals for a new tanker truck. Proposals will be accepted till October 2, 2026. The Committee and Fire Department reps will review the RFP’s and have a recommendation for the October 5th Commission meeting. Financing centers on trying to avoid a large increase in the annual fees to the five CCFC municipal members.

We are fortunate to firemen and first responders willing to dedicate themselves to the time and training required for this community service. Be sure to watch for their fundraising letter in October. Their annual dance will be on November 5, 2026.
