Coon Valley is located in the Town of Coon. A rich history rooted in Norwegian immigration and early 20th-century soil conservation efforts. Originally named Helgedalen by Norwegian settlers in the 1850s.
The area became known for its successful Coon Creek Erosion Control Project, which served as a model for sustainable farming practices in the region. This project focused on contour farming, which significantly improved water quality and land productivity.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a role in the area, constructing barracks for workers involved in the conservation efforts. The Coon Creek project became a blueprint for soil conservation practices in the Driftless area of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota.
